Technology You Can Count On

The Zephyr Pathogen Identifier uses CANARY® (Cellular Analysis and Notification of Antigen Risks and Yields) technology. This novel detection technology, developed at MIT-Lincoln Laboratory. CANARY® utilizes B lymphocyte cells that have been modified to express antibodies on their cell surfaces against targets of choice, as well as to express the bioluminescent protein aequorin. Aequorin emits light when exposed to the increases in intracellular calcium levels that occur upon interaction of the biosensor’s antibody with its cognate target. Due to the rapid kinetics and signal amplification of cell-based signaling, detection of pathogens with CANARY® offers sensitivities down to 50 cfu/pfu with a 5 minute time to result. Sophisticated algorithms are used to accurately detect and identify pathogens based on the biosensor light emission.

CANARY ® technology has been tested at Dugway Proving Ground, Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center and Battelle Memorial Labs. The technology has been validated through its use in a government building security biomonitoring system.

CANARY® biosensors offer a superior level of speed and sensitivity. PathSensors has a selection of reagents for the most common biothreat agents including:

  • Bacillius anthracis (anthrax)
  • Ricin
  • Botulism
  • Yersinia pestis (black plague)
  • Tularemia
  • Orthopox virus (smallpox)
  • Salmonella
  • Campylobacter
